Frackers Stop Counting Barrels, Start Making Profits

2017 Gulf of Mexico Drilling and Coring Expedition

In 2017, the United States produced an average of about 9.3 million barrels per day (b/d) of crude oil, about 3.7 million b/d of hydrocarbon gas liquids (natural gas plant liquids and liquefied refinery gases), and about 1.1 million b/d of biofuels, for a petroleum production total of about 14.2 million b/d.

Total petroleum consumption averaged about 19.8 million b/d in 2017.
The difference between petroleum production and consumption is mainly made up of net imports (imports minus exports) of petroleum, changes in petroleum inventories, and petroleum refinery processing gain.
